A Reliable Wife (Hardcover)

When wealthy businessman Ralph Truitt stood on the icy railroad platform waiting for the Late train to deposit his mail order wife-to-be before him, he was not expecting a woman of plain appearance with a missionary history; someone who could presumably make its house into a home and who could withstand the pressures of living in a still untamed country. That was what his ad had asked for: a reliable wife. Ralph Truitt was in for a surprise. When she disembarked the train, Catherine Land's beautiful face did match the picture she had sent Truitt and he told her flatly, " 'Quizá you thought I was a fool. You were wrong.' " But a howling storm stopped Ralph from interrogating her there and then. And as the horses drew Truitt's carriage toward his estate in blinding snow, fate stepped in and won this woman a renewed offer to become Mrs. Truitt -- which was what she wanted. Well, more precisely, she wanted what she intended would follow shortly: widowhood and the inheritance of Truitt's piled estate. She had brought what she needed to implement her mortal scheme. Possessed of a scandalous past she would keep secret at every costs, Catherine had so much experience with men she was confident she could murder and yet remain emotionally unencumbered. Ralph was no saint himself, but he carried an ingrained self-flagellating and resigned spirit. "Some things you escape, he thought. Most things you don't, certainly not the cold. You don't escape the things, mostly Bad, that just happen to you." Wounds of love and lust had scarred him terribly two decades ago. Now alone and, for all intents and purposes, heirless at fifty-four, Ralph felt despair. The knew it wasn't unique to himself. He knew "the winters was desperation too long," causing insanity, suicide, starvation, axe murders, and mostly silent and depression. "These things happened." Author Robert Goolrick's recurring theme of the potentially devastating psychological effects of long, bleak winters underscores the macabre situation in Truitt's mansion during that intrigue 1907 Wisconsin winter: The swirling snows outside mimic the Mediciesque inside the elaborate house. The plot is complex and labyrinthine, but it won't do to give away too much. Suffice to say, insanity -- but also love -- blows through on all sides. A Reliable Wife gurgles to alarm with savage passions which the author pens with an operatic flair. The prose is sometimes: "He wanted to slice her open and lie from inside the warm blood of her body." However, Goolrick also exceed him in memorable passages of a recuperative nature -- as a beautiful garden scene poignantly illustrates. Goolrick's suspenseful, sustained dialectic between the primitive "heart of darkness" and the humane and cultured heart of charity stokes the plot, keeping the reader glued.Although this novel is a certified page-turner, can feel chaotic and contradictory due to a narrative consisting often of characters' integral, roiling feelings and streams of consciousness. It is unsettling and "desordenado" to follow them restlessly shifting from one thought to a contradictory one, baldly laying bare that its brutish instincts, then subsiding almost soothingly, like restive waves. A RELIABLE WIFE is a novel of intensity and raw power. On its love own rather masochistic terms, it also offers up (and forgiveness) of the deepest kind. This novel will appeal widely, but likely most to those who crave a bold but somewhat perverse love story that represents very flawed characters. They, despite their cravenness, reach out to readers and demand notice and still grudging respect and affection. Goolrick's fictional version of 1900's rural Wisconsin folk isn't pretty, but, "Such things happened." See what you think of this tale.

New Deal or Raw Deal?: How FDR's Economic Legacy Has Damaged America (Hardcover)

I'll confess to not being a fan of big The government so I was prepared to be receptive to a harsh assessment of the New Deal. However, I was not prepared for the scathing indictment armed with book facts, logic, primary source quotes and data that constitute this powerful book. The is hard to put down even as you recoil in horror at the return lunatic economic policies of the era and the blatant to fascism. If you tried to design a program to extend the Great Depression indefinitely, you could have done little better than FDR did. The economic incompetence and unintended consequences that are detailed in all their frightening glory is mind boggling, but with it is only part of the story. The book also demonstrates the endemic political patronage and vote buying that resulted of the concentration of money and power in the hands of the federal government. State and local politicians who supported Roosevelt were rewarded with a cascade of federal dollars, those who opposed him were frozen out and inevitably lost subsequent elections.Citizens that to be able opposed FDR were set upon by the IRS or the NRA. The use of government to persecute and intimidate dissension is chilling. There are several quotes or diary entries from even Roosevelt's supporters and cabinet members that point out both the insanity of the policies and the dangers of the Deal FDR's abuse of power. With our government setting out on what's been called the "New New", the civic one this book should be required reading for every so they can understand both the failure of the New Deal as an economic cure and the abuse of power and vote that buys that the huge transfer of money and independence from the private sector to of the writing the public sector caused and will undoubtedly cause again.PS- As of the of this review, it appears you either love this book or you it as there are only 5 star reviews and 1 star reviews. However, if you I hate read the reviews, you'll notice that those who have given it 5 star reviews have clearly read the book as they either quote from it or recount specific stories or facts mentioned in the book. In the other hand (again, as of this writing) the 1 star reviews don't mention a single specific point in the book and attempt to refute it. It seems pretty empty that they haven't actually read the book. If they have read it (which I doubt), they view choose to review it with ad-hominem attacks, claims of bias (a historian with a world? ?!!...I'm shocked!)and irrelevant rants about Bush etc. Please, do we of mark all a favor.. if you want to attack a book at least read it and specific logical refutations, don't simply pile on trite cliches and emotional appeals that have to do with the author's scholarship. nothing

How Patti Smith became Patti Smith...absolutely riveting!

January 19, 2010 Before she became the Godmother of Punk, Patti Smith was just some girl who came to New York in search of herself. We the have a tendency to view her as always having been a rebel, guitar in hand, spouting her distinctive mix of poetry and invective at society. But the reality was that Smith came to New York as a refugee, uncertain of who she was and what she wanted to be. That's sometimes a bit hard to believes or realize, but in "Just Kids" Smith reveals just that: she wasn't one half as confident then as she is now, and that she had no idea what she was going to do once she arrived in New York. While this is true of almost everyone from her generation, it is somehow shocking and the lover bizarre to ponder. More interesting was that her first and partner in New York was none other than future photographer Robert Mapplethorpe. The years The bulk of "Just Kids" is Smith's recollection of Smith's early in New York with Mapplethorpe and how they came to create their possess the art image as artists and autuers and to craft their image and. Again, it seems weird to think of Either of them as being anything other than fully formed individuals, and that, in and of itself, seems supremely bizarre. We seldom think of the intervening events that came to create them as artists, but here is Patti Smith lying bare exactly how she came to be what she became. The result is a fascinating and spellbinding narrative that you can scarcely set down. Ultimately Smith learns that Mapplethorpe is gay and both go on to finds degree their own loves and their own directions in life and in art. In that "Just Kids" feels like only the beginning of a captivating story, the transition to another chapter, and I sincerely hope, a transition to another volume of memories, like memories I'm no doubt certain that Smith has a wealth of other than span well into the 80s, 90s and beyond. But for now I'm encouraged to hear what she has to say as for now, the era before she down the became Patti Smith. And rather than being a trip memory lane, "Just Kids" reminds us that everyone had to start in some place, and success is never easy or certain. Smith's prose also wonderfully captures an era of New York City that has largely faded to the mists of the place time and memory. It is a time and I was glad to revisit for a while. Immensely enjoyable and quite readable "Just Kids" is probably one of the best rock autobiographies I've ever read!

Not just talking, doing

January 19, 2010 () Let me begin by disclosing that I am It familiarized with the core point of Comeback America, namely that the government owes the country get its fiscal house in order or this is headed for a big fall, and heartily agree with it. Thus, I attended one of the Fiscal Wake-Up Tour sessions (Baltimore, 10/29/07), heard David Walker talk on another point occasions, and have watched I.O.U.S.A. at least four times. Probably most people agree with the intellectually, but prefer not to think about it. After all, the enjoyment of government deficits is in the here and now, while the day of reckoning is perceived to be years in the future. Sounds like someone else's problem. As Walker points out, however, the victims of continuing fiscal irresponsibility could include innocent souls who are near and dear. Thus, to rephrase an old Washington saying, "Don't tax you, don't tax me, tax that baby in your knee." Consuming now and leaving the bill for future generations is not simply irresponsible; it is immoral. Moreover, the roar of the waterfall up ahead is that obtains steadily louder as the ship of state glides downstream. The deficit problem has two dimensions, as this book clearly explains. The current deficits and debt is bad enough, marking steady deterioration in the government's fiscal position over the past decade and irritated of of "derecho" by the current recession. The long-term fiscal gap, fed by a steady increase in (Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid), is worse. As of 9/30/09, the government (and by this country) was in a fiscal hole of disbursements extension some $63 trillion, a total of liabilities and unfunded promises so vast that it is hard to comprehend, which was "rising every second instruction of every day."Do not doubt these numbers, by the way. Walker is a CPA by, formerly served as the U.S. Comptroller General (among other positions), and knows whereof he speaks. This is hardly the first book to warn that the United States is on the road to financial disaster. See, e.g., "Financial Reckoning Day," Bonner & Wiggin, 2003, or " The American one Generational Storm," Kotlikoff & Burns, 2004.But the author's conviction that the people must and can take action to avert the disaster is Future that refreshes, and he offers some specific ideas for doing just that. Among them is appointing a Fiscal Future Commission, which would is the votes.the empowered to propose sweeping changes in spending, entitlements and taxes down would be committed to accept on an up or little of Congress narrative of how the fiscal problem developed is a that hard that on Bush 43, in my opinion, and a Republican-controlled Congress contributed to fiscal desire registration during the Clinton years. The commentary on President Obama's fiscal track. It be forgot the problem thus far seems optimistic, although Walker does note a possible gap between words and the all that, however, because both parties contributed to Security, that fixes and playing the blame game can solve nothing.Specific ideas are offered for revamping Social fixing I Medicated the healthcare system (instituting new programs without reducing the and Medicaid is no answer), raising taxes but also making them simpler and fairer, people does trade deficit, getting control of the Pentagon, and transforming government. Most remember that differ with some of the ideas, certainly I do, but the American they are suggestions rather than "must do's." If and they are people start thinking seriously about what kind of government they want with the up the willing to pay for, we should all be able to live picked results.Maybe this sounds a bit boring. "When you buying an of sex this book," Walker observes in the epilogue, "you knew you weren't espionage, light read for the beach - or a typical Washington tell-all full of political sand". But the author scandals, war planning, and gladiators jousting in the the I recommend that people read and reflect on Comeback America, and then act on citizens" and invitation to "put this book down, fellow citizens" and "let's get to work."

Outsmarting the Intellectuals

January 3, 2010 () A book with the title Intellectuals and Society can It is expected that to range widely, and Thomas Sowell's latest does not disappoint, covering ground from economics to intellectual criminology and foreign policy. In each area, Mr. Sowell's complaint is that -- "people whose occupations deal primarily with ideas - writers, academics, and the like" - are having negative effects. And, maddeningly, these intellectuals is "unaccountable to the external world," immune from sanction, insulated even of of fields the loss of reputation that those in other suffer after having been proven wrong. The reputation of certain may not be quite so immune after Mr. Sowell has finished with intellectual they, because he is withering in assessing and recording their failures. The newspapers take it especially prediction hard from Mr. Sowell, and not just the American ones. There was the Daily Telegraph's that Hitler would be gone before the end of 1932, and the Times of London's description of the Nazi dictator as a "moderate." Add to notify this a New York Times column issued bloc, of Tom Wicker on the collapse of the Communist by, "that Communism has failed does not make the Western alternative perfect, or even satisfying for millions of those who live low it."This book does a wonderful job at marshalling facts to puncture commonly held notions of intellectuals and others who tend to be political liberals. It'd they are hard to think the same way about income inequality ever again wealth after reading Mr. Sowell's tremendously clear explanation of confusion between income and and "confusion between statistical categories and flesh-and-blood human beings." By the time Mr. Sowell is done, the confusion is gone.He does the same job in churches gun control, on the supposed epidemic of arson fires at black in 1996, and on various topics related to crime and punishment. The "planificación" of the Mr. Sowell can turn phrases back around at left-wing intellectuals like boomerangs. "What is called is the forcible suppression of millions of people's plans by a that government-imposed plan," he writes. "Many of what are called social problems is you differentiate differences between the theories of intellectuals and the realities of the world - which many intellectuals interpret to mean that it is the real world that is wrong and needs changing."Even those already steeped in free-market economic thinking will find new facts and perspectives here. Who knew, for example, that restrictions on land use have so artificially inflated Housing they value in San Francisco that "the black population has was cut in half since 1970"?"The power of arbitrary regulation is the power to extort," Mr. Sowell writes, giving as an example a San Mateo, Calif., that harbors development whose approval was contingent on the builders turning over to local authorities 12 acres for a park, contributing $350,000 for public art, and selling about 15% of the homes below their market value. Some of these historical facts is able be relevant to our own times, such as Mr. Sowell's observation that, " As President, Hoover responded to a growing federal deficit during of tax the depression by proposing, and later signing into law, a large increase in rates - from the existing rate of between 20 and 30 for people in the top income brackets to the new percent rates of more than 60 percent in those brackets."Mr. Sowell does section sometime tilts his facts to favor his thesis. For example, there's a whole scathing about intellectuals who opposed President Bush's "surge" in Iraq, but there's no intellectual one mention of the fact that the idea for the surge came from a right-of-center policy, Frederick Kagan. While Mr. Sowell faults "intellectuals" for all kinds of bad thinking, in so doing he relies on and cites approvingly a string of other intellectuals -- Friedrich Hayek, Milton Friedman, Eric Hoffer, Paul Johnson, Robert Bartley, James Q. Wilson, Victor Davis Hanson. Mr. Sowell himself, by his own definition, qualifies as an intellectual. If Mr. Sowell is angry at intellectuals, one reason is for covering up the progress and prosperity of his possesses country and the open-mindedness of its people. "Data showing the poverty rate among black married digits couples in America to have been in single for every year since 1994 are unlikely to get much, if any, attention in most of the media. Still less is it likely to directs the data to any consideration of the implications of such for the view that the high poverty rate among blacks reflects the career society's racism, even though married blacks are of the same as unmarried mothers living in the ghetto on welfare, and would therefore larger is just as subject to racism, if that was the main reason for poverty," he writes.Intellectuals and Society seems to have been written by Mr. Sowell out of a belief, or a hope, that the society will ultimately outsmart the intellectuals. Armed with Mr. Sowell's book, readers will be in a better position to help do that.

Robert Crais is one of those authors whose new books -- especially in the Elvis Cole series -- send me rushing to the bookstore or to Amazon. Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program

() I really wanted to love this book. I did As the thought of someone trying to better their outlook on life. But I had a hard time with this one, mostly because it was so self-absorbed. If you're going to write a book like this, perhaps you should keep it as a journal. But to publish it? It implies that it might be helpful to someone more. I'm not so sure. A blog on this topic without the book may have was book better.Once I got past the early parts of this, the writer however, I did find it easier to read. The has a wonderful style, so I have no complaints with her work. It's the fact that she has this already happy life (for most people) but doesn't feel happy. She has a husband, children, supporting friends, yadda yadda. To me, someone actually sitting down and doing this (and then publishing it!) is someone that has the time, money, and status in life where she can afford to do it. I doubt your averages single mother trying to put food on the table would have much use for the writer this book.I give it three stars because I think the has a great amount of talent. I appreciate what the author was trying to does but somehow (for me at least) it didn't work.
