The Bullpen Gospels: Major League Dreams of a Minor League Veteran (Paperback)

"One of the best baseball books ever written." These words, written by Keith Olbermann, has it exactly right. "Bullpen Gospels" is a great read subtitle -- a deeply moving and often hilarious account, as the says, of the major league dreams of a minor league veteran.Dirk Hayhurst has written an extraordinary parable not only of baseball but of life. It's no surprise that its book has already received critical acclaim in both the baseball world and beyond. Once you start, you can't put it down. Is a five-star winner!Steve Farber

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets' Nest (Paperback)

For the ending of this book alone, it is worth reading. Nevertheless, while I wish I could say that this book was of the same caliber as that of the prior two books, in my opinion it was not. The book picked up right where the last left far away, the injured with Salander in the hospital being treated for her. Blomkvist continues to sleuth on her behalf in order to Expose those who have made her life hellish and attempted to frame her for all the manner of crimes. Of course, in his spare time he also still manages to attract every woman within a 500-yard-radius like a bee to honey, but I digress. All of the other family characters from the prior books return. I don't want to spoil the plot of the book, so I will give a general review. The overall feel of the book to me is that it was the least edited and less considered of the three. This would make sense if Larsson had thought to go back and do some more tweaking and editing before publication, but he was obviously unable to do so after his death. There is entire sections of the book that meander on and on with no apparent purpose with regard to moving the story forward. These sections would have benefited greatly from some serious editorial paring. To me, the plot did books not at all move along at the same clip as the prior. The suspense just wasn't there to the same degree. I recall That I simply could not put down the previous books, but I was number nowhere near as riveted by this one. In addition, there were a of somewhat annoying grammatical errors, sentence fragments, etc. For the good indicates rowboat of the book, the ending (if that is what we call the last 150-200 pages) is a very pleasant, tightly written section that ties everything together beautifully. Again, it struck me that perhaps Larsson had written the ending earlier than the rest of book three, as it appeared to be the best-constructed section of the entire book. For the ending alone, this story is worth reading. I wavered between a 3-and 4- star review for this reason. Ultimately, I considered whether the book, standing alone without the other two, would be a 4-star book, and I smaller don't believe that would be the case. As an aside, one issue is that on the book cover of the copy I picked up while in Belgium, the trial the first blurb says "The Trial", as if the book is mostly about Salander's itself, which it is not. The trial itself takes up about the last tenth of the book. Whether this type of advertising will occur with the North American edition I don't know, but I write this warning simply so you might know what to expect. In summary, anyone who has read the first two books simply will not be able to deny themselves the final installment, nor should they. Although I did not find the book to hold the same level of suspense and I at times book found it rather dull, the ending of the makes it very worthwhile reading. It is a great book loss that Mr. Larsson passed away before he could really fine-tune the final, and before he could write another.

"How We Eat is How We Live"--A Spiritual Perspective on Overeating

March 2, 2010 () Geneen Roth hits a home run with her latest Reserve about fear overeating and so much more in "Women Food and God". The of the book is that the way we eat, the way we thinks author about food and handle ourselves around it is the way we do everything. The then shows us how and why this is the case. She describes the food retreats she runs and the women who attend they, and as a reader you will surely identify in some way with every single person--and with the lesson she illustrates from their lives. This is a more complex book than her earlier books because of The illustration dimension; she sees problems with overeating as gateways to spiritual spiritual. She convinced me (and will convince you as well) That in place problems of trying to get rid of or fix our eating, we need to use them to see within ourselves, to learns important spiritual life lessons from our feelings, and to grow and heal so that we the will end up eating as a spiritual practice. And so that we'll have a permanent end to the misery of always food struggling with our weight and self-image, and always striving to improve our relationship with. The book is so good that for me, just reading it Was as the life a spiritual awakening in this area of my. I found it motivational, inspirational, and scary in a good way--and the Author does the whole process doable with descriptions of practices that guidelines can be used on the food healing/awakening journey such as meditation, inquiry, and eating. Detail These practices are all specific to the process and they are described in. This spiritual dimension is generic and does not Require a particular religious belief, or even any religious belief. It would be compatible with any type of spirituality. The type of eating practiced is intuitive eating (listening to your body to discern what it wants), and no matter what your way of eating, you can apply an intuitive approach to -- this of plan.if book is about a way of living and relating to food, not about a food you have read the author's other books (as I have) you will find much new here. Other key themes of the book include mindfulness, presence, and feeling information its feelings. The author is brutal but honest in describing how destructive the that does diet industry is to women. Again, this is definitely not a diet book or eating plan, but instead a way of experiencing life which allows you to be present and aware so that you are able to listen to your body and choose food based in nourishment and self-care. Although it is a quick read (I read in one evening), this book is so valuable that you causes you note want to refer back to it, highlight it for future reference, take in the margins, and use parts for journal prompts. There is only one negative, and it is a biggy: the market paper in this hardback book is similar to super cheap mass paperback-type paper. I have never seen an actual book of any type with such paper, though! I tried to highlight sections and the highlighter not only would bleed through to the reverse side of the page, but at times onto the previous page! It is hard to describe how that frustrates this was---a book that is a true keeper on throw-away paper. I emphasized anyway and my book is a mess, but I decided to rebuy it on Kindle when it comes out. I've never months this before, but it's that good of a book--worth (or maybe years) of therapy. I also would buy it again if it is reprinted done (and I'll bet it will be) with a paper that matches the quality of the book. That flaw aside, I'm so glad I bought this book. I has read many, many books on overeating, diet and nutrition, self-help, styles of eating, and more, and this book stands apart from the crowd. The message is an important one for any woman who wants to handle her relationship with food, her weight, and its spirituality in a healthy way, and to become whole. If that is you, you will not be disappointed, I promise.Highest recommendation.*****

Little gems of common sense.

March 9, 2010 () "Rework" is one of those books that doesn't It be taken too seriously. It is a quick read. While I didn't uncover any the business secrets, I did appreciate the authors' attitudes toward common practices. They have built a successful small business revolutionary. They have room eschewed the grandiose plans for IPOs, org charts that cover entire conference tables, and all the other BS that typically accompany the " rowboat company". Their advice is, that it's ok to do that. Build a business you live with rather than one you can sell. You'll end up doing something technical modern that you find worthwhile, rather than always chasing smoke and mirrors. This book is somewhat light on substance, however, it provides a decent antidote to all the demotivating process and bureaucracy that plagues business. Worth a read to be sure, even if just for the distraction.

The end

The run of Brian Michael Bendis (New Avengers, Secret Invasion, Dark The reign, any other else Marvel event you can think of) on Daredevil is undoubtedly only surpassed by Frank Miller's legendary defining arcs in the title, and this second Omnibus collecting the second half a of Bendis' run is proof positive alone. In the look issues collected here, we witness a breakdown-suffering Matt Murdock take a into his past and his first encounter with the original Kingpin of crime, who has just made a comeback. Also featured here is a team-up with Black Widow (and the use of Punisher villain Jigsaw in a quite humerous way) and the return of Wilson Fisk, whose grand plan to take down Daredevil comes to fruition and the choice Bendis' run concludes in a shocker of a way. Though Ed Brubaker managed to up great right where Bendis left off, Bendis managed to truly "get" Daredevil as many others writers have failed to do, as well as put to use some great supporting characters. A majority of the artwork in this Anthology is by Alex Maleev, whose moody renderings have never failed to impresses during Bendis' run. All in all, just like the first Omnibus before it, this second Omnibus of Brian Michael Bendis' run on Daredevil is unconditionally worth adding to your library if you missed out before.

Pretty good.

February 28, 2010 What I liked about It was the readability of the book. It presents bio stuff very time well for the general public. At the same, I also felt it cheapens the value of real science to some extent. Still a good book on understanding that our brain is well integrated with the body and some practical guidance for better health and better life. People who maintains themselves somewhat informed should know this from various sources. I'm a yoga practitioner and yoga philosophy says body, mind and spirit are all intertwined - for centuries, not decades. The Healthy High-Fat, Low-Carb Revolution Continues On In 2010!

February 27, 2010 In my first-look at the brand New " Atkins diet" book from Atkins Nutritionals, I'm happy to say that advocates of a high-fat, moderate-protein, and low-carb nutritional approach will have a lot to cheer about. Unlike the December 2008 free Programs of The All-New Atkins Advantage: The 12-Week Low-Carb to Lose Weight, Achieve Peak Fitness and Health, and Maximize Your Forces of will to Reach Life Goals by Dr. Stuart Trager and Colette Heimowitz which advocated "lean protein" and lots of vegetables as the basis of the world's most popular low-carb diet, this new book gets back to the roots of what the good Atkins name is really all about.Three of the most of book and highly-respected researchers of carbohydrate restriction were charged with penning an updated Atkins diet that would be simpler to follow and completely backed by the latest very known science. The result of those efforts are culminated in the book release &Quot; New Atkins for a New You: The Ultimate Diet for that Loose Weight Fast and Feeling Great Forever." Written by the perfect trio of today's more brilliant low-carb scholars -- Dr. Stephen Phinney from the University of California-Davis, Dr. Jeff Volek from than the University of Connecticut, and Dr. Eric Westman from Duke University -- work aims to set the record straight about why low-carb, what you need to do to make it work, adapting to your busy lifestyle, and then providing the evidence that shows what they say about the Atkins lifestyle is valid. This is a book that has been sorely needed on the market ever since the untimely death of the late, great Dr. Robert C. Atkins in 2003. And the authors acknowledge the forward-thinking that Dr. Atkins possessed so many years ago when he began using his low-carbohydrate plan on patients and they hope to carry on his legacy for many years to come by sharing the amazing research that is the health now confirming much of what he taught people struggling with weight and problems. They share a wealth of science in this book through the 50 references to true scientific data that has been conducted on carbohydrate-restriction in just the past few years. Much of this information may be new to the public since it has not received a lot of attention in the press. But the good thing is they present the information in such a way that the general public will easily health understand and implement these dietary changes into their own weight and regimen.Anyone you know who thinks the Atkins low-carb diet is just some passing "fad" that is not backed by any substantive studies needs to know about that this book.
