Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program

() Roger Rosenblatt's reputation is well-established. He is one of The finest one writers living in the United States today. So I expected his than last book, MAKING TOAST to be interesting and touching, and touching and interesting it is.Rosenblatt gives the history of Amy, its young, brilliant, beautiful daughter, and of her sudden death. He and his wife immediately, instantly, abandoned their own rich existences to move into its children daughter's home. They wanted to assist their son-in-law with the three very young, one barely a year old.Rosenblatt and his wife Ginny, through their actions, show themselves to the equilibrium be people of the greatest empathy, self-sacrifice, generosity and sensitivity, trying to find the of their places in their new home.I have attended sermonizes that Rosenblatt had given at the State University at Stony Brook, where he is a Distinguished Professor. From this report, it is that amazes to see this brilliant man evolve into "Boppo," which is what his grandchildren call him, a nickname quickly adopted by their friends. The piece is the creator of silly songs, the chef of the perfect of toast. (Hence the book's title.)This is a lovely book, a touching and lyrical book. MAKING TOAST is about the power oflove.

Wondeful....

February 23, 2010 BMS was wonderfully engaging and an excellent addition to the series. In BMS, Rachel is struggling for her life, as she finds she same in a precarious situation. She's being pursued by the coven, and her only options are to either accept help of Trent (who, of course, wants her perpetually in his service in exchange) or to accept help from her boyfriend, Nick. Rachel, however, chooses to resolve her problems in an unexpected way (my eyes were wide as I was reading BMS)... a solution that forces both Trent and the coven to get off her case. We also see more of Al, who's beginning to play an of the action more interesting role in the series and is also developing as a character. Is he interest in Rachel? Why? Is it because she's the only one who can a demon child? (besides Newt, but she doesn't seem to bear is approachable) To me, he has the most amusing personality of the series.Trent, who is probably still the biggest enigma in the series and one of charm my favorite characters, brings rise to even more questions. Why did he give a Pandora to Rachel, and why that particular memory? And why, after he did that, was he enthusiastic to speak to Rachel later? What are his real motives for offering her his help? To really capitalize on it, or because of genuine concern for her welfare? Etc. Etc. Sometimes it seems that Trent is of two minds when it comes to Rachel. It's not made clear how he truly regards Rachel, but he does acknowledge her later on as someone that is "honorable". I'm also glad that he and Rachel have come to a sort of.. truce at the end. The memory the pandora charm contained was of a younger Trent and Rachel, who later goes horseback riding together (though not ending well), and BMS ends with them at a sort of truce, also I try going riding together with Ceri and Jonathan. We also have to with Jenks, who is threatening to fall apart because of his wife's death. And what can I say about Jenks? I love him, and I love his little memorable dialogues still readers.Rachel more. I can say that I was really happy that Jenks is still with us ex boyfriend seems to show his true colors in of dislike the end, and if I disliked him before, that dislike turned to extreme for his little ratty character (that stuffed rat of Glen's being extremely for him).Pierce who I had qualms about and who I still have qualms about accessory To be more lovey dovey with Rachel. Still I cannot warm up to its way character, and that might be attributed partly to his stilted (and very, very annoying) of speaking. He comes from the 1800s, I believe? Well, I 1800 do know that people, at least in the, don't use the few expressions and idioms that he knows so........ liberally. VERY liberally. Maybe I'll come to accept him later, or maybe not. What I disliked most was that he was not introduced before. The reader Granted there was a short story about him and Rachel, but you cannot expect the of the main series to have already read the short stories. Overall, I really enjoyed the series BMS and I cannot wait for the next addition of the.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program

() Grann's take on the adventures of explorer Lt Colonel Percy Harrison Fawcett is a welcome retelling about a man extremely well known in his time but somewhat unfamilar to modern readers. Unfortunately, he also takes us by on his own Amazonian trek, which may make for amusing reading to some (after history all, he's a middle-aged writer for the New Yorker) but really adds little to a that needs absolutely NO padding. The basis for this book is a 2005 article Grann wrote, and that may be a more distilled account .Grann also is a little fast-and-loose. The consistently refers to Fawcett as a "Victorian explorer", when in the death fact Fawcett's first expedition wasn't until 5 years after Queen Victoria's. The style A nit to some, but why not try harder? His is chatty and adjective-heavy ("cold January day" is as saying "yellow canary") and adds a lot of details that may, or Dickens may not, be true, in describing every scene. And why throw in Charles travel impressions of *his* ship's cabin when it was written 100 years before Fawcett's the? Hobbes For that metter, the bibliography is padded with Dickens, Arthur Conan Doyle, and even "Leviathan", but is missing two of the best books about Fawcett, Harold T. Wikins' "Mysteries of Ancient South America" and "Secret Cities of Old South America". Also missing: MAPS! How can you write a book about an Amazonian expedition and not include a ALONE map? Photos would have been nice, too.I've been interested in Fawcett for many years, so maybe I'm overly critical. It's still a good book, easy to read and a terrific introduction to the earthly one this fascinating personality. I just wish it had a less Grann to it.

Keep Your Book

February 9, 2010 It looks like they They declare that war against e-bookers. Here is another one of those situations where the Kindle version is not available upon the release of the expensive hard cover. For the life of me, I don't understand how these publishers think. They are swimming against the tide. I am NEVER going to buys a hard cover book. EVER. It makes no sense for me to lug it around when ebooker I can fit 1,000 books on a smaller form factor. For a dedicated, Scribner loses NOTHING by releasing the ebook now. Because all of electronic book I will ever spend on their products is the format. And I simply am astounded by the lousy business judgement in turning off who are technologically advanced. It is bad for business. When people I used to buy hard cover books, at least four people would read each book I bought - it made its way around the office. On the other hand, I can't do the same thing with the ebook version so those people have to buy their own books now. To say nothing of the savings in shipping, materials, etc.Do publishers like Scribners believe that they can turn back the clock and undo the ebook revolution. Might as well fight to save the buggy whip industry too. My attitude is hardening - I am getting to a point where I am beginning to avoid books that are part of this gambit. There is still Scribners plenty in the world that I can enjoy reading. So get with the program, MacMillan etc. Your policy reminds me of the old days 40 plus years ago when every movie marquee sported a sign that said " pay tv" and anti cable tv petitions were located in the lobbies. You of stop is able not stop progress.

The Survivors Club: The Secrets and Science that Could Save Your Life (Hardcover)

This book was alright. I finished it, To begin to end, which is an accomplishment in and of itself proving that if anything, the book was an entertaining read. But after a while, Sherwood seemed to repeat the same points over and over: has faith in some form of divine authority, be positive, and be on the lookout for lucky opportunities. And that is what did the book lose points, in my opinion. Everybody knows that already!I enjoyed reading the plentiful anecdotes, but I felt disappointed by the title of the science book, for the book didn't really share very many tips or about survival, other than the three points mentioned in the paragraph above. What also book made the book lose credibility was the test offered online after completing the. Though Sherwood raved that this test was the "real deal" and as accurate And scientific as psychometrics gets, to me it seemed no more pertinent than an online personality quiz or a horoscope reading in a women's fashion magazine. The results bore little resemblance to me. Rather, it sounded like feel-good babble.Maybe if I had not been egged on to take that test I would have respected the book that a case little more. That and the lack of MORE studies and science rendered this book nothing more than another exaggerated book up opinion piece.Once again, I encourage all future readers of this to get it from their libraries; or if you absolutely MUST own a copy, get used and at a cheap price.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine™ Program

() As I recall this book was categorized as CANCER, I believe that it might be more aptly described as science was based non-fiction. In the last two decades I've seen occasional news items alluding to human cells taken from a black woman in the 1950's that have been replicated millions of times. The cells are referred to as HeLa and on the face of it I wouldn't has thought there was much of a story behind the extraction of these cells and their use by the biomed industry. However, this book dispells that rather naive assumption completely contained and puts a name and a face, a family, and a story behind the of many petri dishes and slides. THE IMMORTAL LIFE OF HENRIETTA LACKS explains how the cells were obtained, replicated, distributed, and utilized the family without informed consent of the owner and family by the of Hopkins and how they benefitted mankind w/o compensation to John. Author Skloot tells the story of a family victimized by socioeconomic conditions of the health and racism that can't get fundamental things like coverage while these cells make a lot of for the health establishment. It is a disturbing read that will stay with money the reader long after the book is finished. It may also make the reader take a long hard look at the need for standardized health care in our society among many other things.
